They smuggle themselves and Kichijiro onto the shores of Japan, landing in the mountains near Nagasaki. A Portuguese superior of the Church warns them of a magistrate named Inoue, a particularly cruel and devilish persecutor, but nevertheless helps Rodrigues and Garrpe commission a Chinese ship and crew. While there they are joined by Kichijiro, a pitiful and drunken man about their age whom they suspect is a Christian, though he adamantly denies it. ![]() The pair travel from Portugal to China, hoping to find a covert way to reach Japan. ![]() The Church is both confused and disturbed by this news, and several of Ferreira’s former students (he was a seminary professor before going to Japan) launch an expedition into Japan to continue Ferreira’s former evangelistic work and discover the truth about his apostasy, even though the Japanese government brutally oppresses Christianity.įathers Rodrigues and Garrpe, former students of Ferreira, are Portuguese priests in their late 20s. In 17th-century Portugal, the Roman Catholic Church learns that Father Ferreira, a highly-respected missionary who has worked in Japan for over 20 years, has somehow been made to commit apostasy, renouncing Christianity by stamping his foot on a picture of Jesus Christ. ![]()

6/8/2023 0 Comments William shakespeare collection![]() ![]() ![]() The 1590s were the peak of the sonnet vogue in England: 20 first edition sonnet books appeared between 15. No edition seems to have resulted from the entry, though, suggesting that this may have been a "staying entry" intended to prevent other stationers from publishing an edition. Scholars continue to debate whether some of the 1609 sonnets are the same as noted by Francis Meres in 1598, or whether Shakespeare wrote, or at least actively revised, them for publication in 1609.įurther, two sonnets (138 and 144) appeared in a 1599 anthology called The Passionate Pilgrim, and Eleazar Edgar entered “"certain oyr sonnetes by W.S." into the Stationers' Register on January 3, 1600. Meres' reference suggests that at least some of the 154 poems that later appeared in the 1609 quarto were written by 1598, but were only available to those few of his "priuate friends" who were able gain access to them in the more restricted sphere of manuscript circulation. Eleven years earlier, in 1598, Francis Meres alluded to Shakespeare’s “sugred Sonnets among his priuate friends, &c.” in his work Palladis Tamia. This late date is surprising for several reasons. Shakespeare’s collection of 154 poems in the English sonnet form was first published in 1609. ![]() 6/8/2023 0 Comments The human body bill bryson![]() ![]() The idea of the book is simply to try to understand the extraordinary contraption that is us.'īill Bryson sets off to explore the human body, how it functions and its remarkable ability to heal itself. She was interrogated by the Gestapo 14 times and tortured with a branding iron, the painful extraction of her toenails, deprivation of food, showers, and other creature comforts but she never disclosed any information about other agents. In April 1943, however, Sansom and her handler, Peter Churchill were taken captive and incarcerated in Fresnes Prison, outside of Paris. After rigorous training, Odette was stationed in southern France as a courier, successfully helping the Resistance movement undermine the Nazis from within France. ![]() As a result, Sansom was recruited to become a part of Britain’s Special Operations Executive (SOE) sometimes called “Churchill’s Secret Army.” The mission was to engage in sabotage and espionage in France against the Nazi forces. Sansom, born in France, but living in England in 1942, answered a request from the British Admiralty for pictures of the French coastline but mistakenly sent the photos from her youth to the War Office. What is the book about? British housewife and mother, Odette Sansom, became known as the most highly decorated spy of World War II. ![]() Reviewed by: Becky Houghton, Reference Assistant ![]() ![]() The eponymous Jill is Kemp's imaginary sister, whom he invents to confound Warner. Move Forward has since begun talks with other parties to form a coalition government. Think of this as Thailand’s “deep state.”Now the military faces a dilemma after an election that could prove the most consequential in a generation. Any elected government that takes on the military, or is seen as a threat to its status, runs the risk of being deposed, if not by tanks in the streets then by a “judicial coup,” in the form of a court order that disbars politicians and dissolves their parties. ![]() As a Monitor correspondent in Thailand, I covered elections and coups, in that order. ![]() 6/6/2023 0 Comments Bitter End by Jennifer Brown![]() It’s impossible to read about a woman being kicked and called a “dirty slut” by the man who “loves” her and not be affected, I think. In the interest of being honest, I must confess that certain parts of Bitter End made my physically ill. Bitter End is a book that I think many teen girls need to read today Brown’s message is extremely important and, sadly, too often overlooked or laughed at.Īn abusive relationship is, naturally, a difficult thing to write and read about. Rape culture and domestic abuse are two things I’m wildly, wildly passionate about, and, keeping in mind the somewhat frightening acceptance (and promotion) of unhealthy relationships in today’s media, I don’t think Jennifer Brown could have written a book more in need of writing. ![]() So I think it’s significant that Bitter End impacted me as much as it did and caused the reactions it did. I do like that some of the supporting characters got a bit more air time. Still it was fun when you get past the constant, "it's my fault" language. I wish the author had spent less time having Elena seek absolution from absolutely everyone and more time developing a streamlined story. ![]() If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?Ī little long winded with a great deal of narrative spent regretting the loss of others, missing those who have passed, self blame and brooding. I felt like I was listening to William Shatner a few too many times because of her cadence but otherwise, I thought she brought the characters to life and gave them each a personality rather well. I've listened to Erin perform through all three books available for audio. Have you listened to any of Erin Moon’s other performances before? How does this one compare? It's got qualities of magic, secret places, lost heirs and a need to fight off a great evil.
